Grippingbeast star sapphire ring, size 7

Grippingbeast star sapphire ring, A Viking ring designed and made by George Postgate. This design was inspired by the carvings on the Oslo Viking A Viking ring designed and made by George Postgate. This design was inspired by the carvings on the Oslo Viking long boat. The ship and many of its contents are located in a museum in Oslo Norway that is dedicated to it. These designs inspired me to make a special viking ring. The garland of playful dragons carved into the sides of the ship is the source of many of my Viking designs. These dragons seem a bit ameba like as they pass through, under, and around each other. I've carved two dragons and set them into two triangles of Viking designs. The dragons face a bezel set plum colored star sapphire. This link will take you to more Viking designs: https://postgatejewelers.com/viking-jewelry/

Grippingbeast star sapphire ring, Details:

I combined elements of both the new and old Viking carvings in the design of this ring. The ring was first hand carved in wax and then cast in 14k gold and hand finished. The stone in the center of the ring is a natural untreated purple star sapphire approximately 8 X 6mm probably from Burma. The stone is native cut and a bit irregular in shape which makes it perfect for this design.

The Oslo Viking Long boat, A bit of history:

The ship was found in a farmer’s field in 1880. The ship had been used for the burial of someone who was obviously very
important. Twelve horses and six dogs were among the contents of the ship when it was buried. The ship was 76’ long by 17’
wide with a 40’ mast. It had 16 oars on each side. This type of ship was used to transport up to 70 persons or 16 tons of
cargo. It was also very effective in warfare as it could navigate very shallow waters.

I liked the designs on the ship because they are distinctly Viking and they have the raw power and belief in the gods of old
still in them. Along with the old carvings are some restoration carvings that continue the designs where the originals were
lost. The original carvings are not nearly as perfect as the later ones but the beasts in them have darker personalities. The
old designs are also less predictable. The later designs show over a thousand years of woodworking improvements. They
are predictable and very pleasing.
