Viking Gripping Beast wedding band in rose gold and white gold.

This Viking Gripping Beast wedding band was made and designed by George Postgate. The design was inspired by the designs carved into the prow and stern of an ancient Viking Longboat in Oslo. Suzan and I are great fans of Viking art. I like the designs because they are distinctly Viking and they have the raw power and belief in the gods of old still within them. The carvings, as well as the shape of the longboat, which resembles a giant dragon, may have given its crew a feeling of safety as they sailed into the unknown. We have many Norse designs on our website and we are always making new ones, click here to see more: https://postgatejewelers.com/viking-jewelry/

Details:

I combined elements of both the new and old carvings in the center of the band to form a garland of gripping beasts. I carved the details in wax and cast them in red 14k gold. I placed the central design between two borders of white gold. The borders are high enough to protect the band’s details to insure that it will last many years. The inside edges of the band are rounded to ensure that the band will be comfortable to wear.

The Oslo Longboat:

The ship was found in a farmer’s field in 1880 it ship had been used for the burial of someone who was obviously very important. Twelve horses and six dogs were among the contents of the ship when it was buried. The ship was 76’ long by 17’ wide with a 40’ mast. It had 16 oars on each side. This type of ship was used to transport up to 70 persons or 16 tons of cargo. It was also very effective in warfare as it could navigate very shallow waters.
