The Luckenbooth

Luckenbooths are a cherished part of Scottish culture that started out when vendors had to wear silver luckenbooth broaches to show that they had purchased licenses to sell their wares out of locked wooden cases along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. These brooches were later endowed with many powers like keeping fairies from stealing babies and keeping lovers faithful. The brooches became even more meaningful and popular, when one was given to Mary Queen of Scots as a token of love.
