Wax Grapevine band

Wax Grapevine band

Wax Grapevine band carved in wax by George Postgate

The Wax Grapevine band is the first step in making a beautiful gold grapevine ring. Grapevine pieces are a longtime favorite theme of ours. We love making flowing beautiful compositions of vines leaves and a few bunches of grapes. Many of our customers love grapes, vines, and wine. If you love jewelry inspired by nature, Please check out some of our favorites here: https://postgatejewelers.com/product-category/flowers-vines-and-animal-jewelry/

I’ve made a few grapevine wedding bands in the past but I have wanted to do one that was more irregular in shape for a long time. My wax grapevine  band gets wider on top and tapers to a fairly normal width band at its bottom. This shape will bring the band back on the hand a bit on its top side which will make the wearer’s finger appear longer with the band on than their finger looks without a ring on it. A narrower band under the finger makes the band much more comfortable.

The multiple colors of wax are intended to make the wax easier to “read”. Some of the wax was used because it flows more easily,or is stronger. The original model was “built up” in a technique that is similar to painting. Wax hardens as it cools and can be “Painted” in three dimensions into a fairly detailed original model. The model is then carved to give it more, and finer details. Finally, the wax is cast in 14K Gold. In gold the ring’s details are refined and other textures are applied. FaceBook:

We have a wide selection of our work on FaceBook. Some pieces are shown in various stages of completion. When we do a special piece for a customer we often send them image of waxes. This makes it easier for them to understand what we are doing. It also allows us to work together and insure the creation of something special: https://www.facebook.com/Postgate-Fine-Jewelers-111540785537658/photos/?view_public_for=111540785537658&ref=page_internal
