History of the Luckenbooth

Luckenbooths are a cherished part of Scottish culture. They began as brooches that vendors wore to prove that they had purchased seller’s licenses. This was required to sell their wares out of locked wooden cases along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. These brooches were later popular gifts that were thought to be endowed with many powers. They were credited with keeping fairies from stealing babies, and insuring that lovers would remain faithful. The brooches became even more meaningful, when one was given to Mary Queen of Scots, as a token of love.

Scottish traders traded silver luckenbooth brooches with native Americans for furs and other goods. The brooches were highly valued by the natives and remain in some of their families to this day. This is just a small bit of the story of the Scottish Luckenbooth.
