History

Claddagh rings are an Irish tradition that has become a mainstream symbol of love friendship and loyalty around the world. The Claddagh ring has one of the most memorable stories in jewelry behind its creation. It was first designed and made by an Irish prisoner of war. He had been captured by the Turks and apprenticed to a Turkish jeweler where he learned jewelry making as a way to pay for his imprisonment, and later to buy his freedom.

When freed, he returned to the ancient fishing village on Galway Bay in the west of Ireland. Once home, he presented his true love with the first Claddagh ring. He had made and designed the ring while still a captive in Turkey. The Claddagh ring has since evolved into a universal symbol of love and friendship.
